CHARLOTTE, NC., Nov. 15, 2018 … The Association of Builders and Contractors (ABC) awarded Hendrick Construction, Inc. an Eagle Award for its construction of new facilities for Providence Day School in Charlotte and a Merit Award for its expansion of Holly Springs Town Center and upfit of O2 Fitness in Holly Springs, N.C.
The Eagle Award goes to the top project in each category, while the Merit Award recognizes leading projects in individual categories.
The Providence Day School project won the Eagle Award in the $10 to $25 million schools division. Hendrick Construction served as general contractor for the 18-month-long construction project that produced the four-story, 77,680-square-foot Academic Center, the 8,903 Gateway Center, and a 200-car parking deck.
The new facilities were being funded through the five-year, $27 million Charging Forward fundraising campaign. In addition to these major construction projects, school officials will use the campaign funds to double the school’s endowment and grow the Annual Fund, which supplements each year’s operating budget by supporting student programs, campus resources, and faculty professional development.
Located at the heart of campus, the Academic Center features 32 learning labs, a 150-seat lecture theater with retractable seating, a modular collaborative learning center, student lounges, a global café and a spirit store. The building was designed with input from Providence Day faculty and students to encourage an interactive, collaborative approach to learning, inspire innovative thinking, and significantly improve pace of life for students and teachers.
The new “front door” to the school, the DeMayo Gateway Center serves as a welcome center for the campus. It houses both the Admissions and College Guidance offices, creating the opportunity for students and families to begin and end their Providence Day School journey in the same location.
A two-story deck provides 200 parking spaces in front of the DeMayo Gateway Center. The enhanced parking increases student and pedestrian safety by reducing vehicular traffic through campus.
The Academic Center, DeMayo Gateway building, and parking deck were designed by respected local architectural firm WGM Design, Inc. WONDER by Design, a multidisciplinary team specializing in the “future of learning,” was a collaborator with the school and WGM Design on many of the innovative learning spaces within the Academic Center.
The expansion of Holly Springs Town Center and upfit of O2 Fitness in Holly Springs, N.C. was honored with a Merit Award in the $2 to $5 million commercial category. Hendrick Construction served as general contractor for this two-part project. Owner Kite Realty Group Trust selected Hendrick Construction for the expansion of the existing Holly Springs Towne Center. During construction of the shell, Hendrick was approached by O2 Fitness to upfit a portion of the space.
Located southwest of Raleigh at the intersection of N.C. 55 and New Hill Road in Holly Springs, N.C., Hendrick Construction added 22,250 square feet of additional space to the existing center anchored by Target, Marshalls, Pier 1, ULTA, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Petco, Michaels, Bed Bath & Beyond, DSW, and AMC Theaters.
With a 2,247-square-foot ground floor and 829-square-foot mezzanine, O2 Fitness’ new facilities feature state-of-the-art equipment, room for a wide variety of group classes and private space for personal training sessions. The most striking element of the upfitted space is its dramatic 36-foot tall open ceilings.
Work began on the shell in March, 2017. The timing of Hendrick’s selection for the upfit enabled the company to overlap a lot of the work, reducing the upfit time by about six weeks. That timing enabled O2 Fitness to open in December ahead of the leading health club membership selling month of January.
